Dogs thought processes are not as complex as those of people, so it is unwise to believe that your dog can literally understand everything you say. If this is your expectation, you will experience disappointment and you won’t get the results you expected. However, you are about to learn how to properly treat your dog so you can train it.
While training your puppy or dog to use a crate, introduce him to new concepts slowly and gradually, so he is able to adjust to the changes without feeling stressed. Once they have grown accustomed to being in the crate with the gate open, try closing the gate and feeding them small treats through the crate. At first, leave the dog enclosed in the crate for only short periods of time, such as 10 seconds, and then gradually increase the duration. If they become upset, you are moving too fast.
Are you house training your dog? If so, then understand that the food and water they consume must come out at some point. Feed your puppy three times regularly each day. If you know when the puppy eats, you will be able to better predict when to take him out. This means fewer accidents!
Do not use shock collars. These devices are expensive and do not always work as well as you would expect them to. These devices can stifle your dog’s natural reactions and have negative effects on even good or acceptable behaviors. The negative training causes negative outcomes.
Decide on a single phrase to use when housebreaking your new puppy. Whenever you take your pet outside to use the bathroom, choose a phrase, like “go potty”, so he remembers what he is there to do.
Have a blast during each training session with your dog. When you play with your dog, it strengthens the bond between you and them, thus encouraging the pet to stay positive during training. Training is fun for the dog, but you should set aside some real “play time” as well.
Train your dog to stop barking with a treat. When he barks, show him his favorite treat, and repeat the command. “Quiet” works well. Only give the treat when you dog has done as you have asked. When you repeat this action multiple times, your dog will eventually learn that the order means to be quiet.
Don’t give a puppy too much information and training at once, or you’ll wear him out. A puppy’s attention span is short and it has a limited amount of energy, so sessions should remain short and positive. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.
