Spike Lee pledges to help Sandy relief effort after film shoot wraps

Admit it — your first thought after seeing pictures of the devastation left by Superstorm Sandy was, “Where’s Spike Lee?” No? Well, Lee did have quite a bit to say when Hurricane Katrina struck, and he directed the Katrina documentary “When the Levees Broke” for HBO. So yes, some are wondering where Lee is when his childhood home of Brooklyn is cleaning up after Sandy.

It turns out Lee is in New Orleans, shooting a remake of the Korean film “Oldboy.” He promises to return to Brooklyn to help with recovery efforts once that film wraps.

I Will Have My Feet Back On The Ground In My Beloved Brooklyn At The Beginning Of December To Help In Person With The Recovery.God Bless.

@spikelee THANK YOU 4 your continued work. Suspending a shoot would put folks outta work where you are/ that doesn’t make sense.

So Lee does get a pass for employing a film crew and bringing jobs to New Orleans.

“@kypac2: @spikelee @mrmilitantnegro how is spike supposed to provide for himself, further help out people if he suspends his movie?”EXACTLY

It’s nice, too, that for once a conversation involving Spike Lee managed not to involve race. Oh, wait. Would a white film director be hassled like this?

“@sicrowe: @spikelee Can’t believe you’re getting static for doin’ your job. Would Jonathan Demme, PT Anderson get hassled? #Sandy“Y’Know It
