Emotional Support Dogs, Sure, But Emotional Support Turkeys? We’ve Gone Too Far

One of the most interesting trends in recent years is the addition of odd animals to the emotional support animals (ESA) family. Since they take their companions everywhere, these people are often asked to supply proof that their animals are, in fact, certified to work as ESAs. However, these certificates can be purchased online from private companies, and they’re easy to pass off as the real thing.

As you can imagine, people have begun abusing the privilege. While we were once satisfied with support dogs, there are more bizarre animals being added to the ESA roster every day.

For example, there’s this emotional support turkey that was spotted on a flight to Seattle last week.

There is technically no law against having an emotional support animal with you in a public place. However, the law is intentionally vague around ESAs and what they are permitted to do. This ambiguity has led to an explosion in the number of ESAs that are “working” all over the country.

This expansion of the ESA industry has caused quite a bit of controversy, especially among those with trained and certified service animals that they need to get through everyday life.

This is inspiring legislators to rethink the ways in which laws deal with the use of ESAs in public spaces.

(source: Reddit)

While I can completely understand someone’s legitimate emotional need to have their pet with them at all times, there are far too many people out there who have taken advantage of this lack of regulation for their own gain. It’s fair to say that they’re really messing things up for those in need.

This Is Officially The Cutest Animal Ever, And You’ve Probably Never Heard Of It

You know what’s adorable? A fluffy raccoon. You know what’s even more adorable? A pint-sized pup. As it turns out, evolution has blessed us with a precious combination of these two critters…and most of us had no idea that it was a thing. This, understandably, is a tragedy.

Thankfully for those of us who aren’t in the know, a Twitter user by the name of Chibi_tori is here to show us the light.

Universe, meet the raccoon dog. Known as tanuki, these animals can be found roaming around in small family units in East Asia. I don’t think that most of us deserve to experience this level of cuteness, but here we are.

This particular nugget was found injured and abandoned by the luckiest Twitter user in the history of Twitter users, and he goes by the name of Tanu.

Because tanuki hibernate in the winter, they essentially turn into cuter versions of us when temperatures drop. Tanu’s fave thing to do in the dead of winter is hang out by his little stove.

“All of the happy is mine!”

He will have you know, however, that he’s not even sort of related to raccoons. He’s all dog, my friends. And if you have a dog, you can probably see a striking resemblance between Tanu’s epic laziness and the bizarre lethargy of your own pup.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251602_56eb960785e8d”, auid: “537251602” });

Tanu is a skilled sleeper.

If you slapped some sweatpants on him, he’d be almost identical to me at any point between September and April.

Oh, and comfort eating? Tanu is about that life.

“Busy hiding from my responsibilities. Plz try again later.”

See? Tanu is us. We are Tanu.

When he’s not napping, he can be found harnessing his inner labrador by playing with his ball.

“I am not raccoon. I am dog. I do dog stuff.”

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251604_56eb96078600e”, auid: “537251604” });

He even peels himself off the couch every now and then to bathe, just like we should all be doing.

After his bath, he likes to direct a disturbing amount of focus toward tangerines.

I mean…do you, man.

But at the end of the day, it all goes full circle. After snack time, he plops his diva self right next to the stove again.

“None of the peasants are scratching me because why?”

(via BuzzFeed)

There you have it, folks. Tanuki are real animals that actually exist, and the world is a better place because of it. If your heart hasn’t exploded yet and you’re looking to tempt fate, keep up with all of Tanu’s antics on Twitter.

Wildlife Medical Team Revives A Baby Rhino In The Nick of Time With CPR

Medical staff around the world are well-versed in performing CPR to save a life, but what do you do if your patient is 900 pounds?

That was exactly what a team of wildlife vets from Working With Rhinos had to figure out when Meha, a baby white rhinoceros orphan, had a negative reaction to sedatives during a routine dehorning operation.

The dramatic footage shows the group of vets and wildlife officers rushing to the rhino’s aid when they notice her heartbeat getting awfully weak. Thanks to the dedication of everyone involved, Meha was quickly revived thanks to repeated chest compressions.

Dehorning is routinely performed on rhinos in captivity. It has proven to be one of the most effective techniques in the relentless fight against ivory poachers.

If You Think Animals Don’t Have Feelings, Get Ready To Cry Watching This Mom Mourn Her Dead Baby

Do you think animals are without feelings? If so, grab a tissue and prepare to have your mind changed.

The heartbreaking video below of a mother sea lion mourning her dead pup proves that humans aren’t the only ones to experience grief and loss. The footage was captured in San Diego, California, by wildlife campaigner Andrea Else Hahn, who believes that the dead pup was born prematurely before she stumbled onto the scene.

Hahn first spotted the grieving mom one day in March of this year, and when she returned to the location the next day, she was surprised to see that the sea lion still hadn’t left her baby’s side.

The mother’s grief is palpable as she howls, cries tears, and thrashes about in the sand next to her dead pup. This distressing scene speaks volumes about animals and their emotions.

These Mailboxes In Japan Are A Little Odd, But They’re Definitely Adorable

Listen. After seeing what’s going on with Japan’s postal service, I’m going to need the USPS to step its game way up.

Although old mailboxes in Japan look kind of like the guy above sans googly eyes, the people charged with designing post boxes in contemporary Japan take their jobs seriously.

And by seriously, I mean not seriously at all. If you walk the streets of Tokyo long enough, you’re bound to run into something that looks more like a giant children’s toy than a mailbox, and it’s bound to be the best experience of your miserable life.

They might look a little odd at first, but when you take a second to sit with the cuteness of Japan’s postal scene, you’ll realize just how much ours is lacking.

I will give the person who brings me that duck one approximately six nickels, which is just about all I have to spare.

I don’t know about you, but the next time I see a boring blue box on the sidewalk, I’m going to weep. Nah, I’m just kidding. (No I’m not.) But seriously, Japan. Stay cute!

30 Of The Most Awesome, Hilarious, And Absolutely Horrible Pumpkin Carvings

After visiting the pumpkin patch with your family, there’s only one real way to put that freshly picked winter squash to good use: pumpkin carving.

Halloween is the perfect time for artists to let their creativity flags fly. When they’re not creating incredible costumes, they’re putting their carving skills to the test by making some pretty epic jack-o’-lanterns. These men and women create things out of their gourds that I could only dream of.

On the other end of the spectrum, though, are the artistically challenged. Admittedly, I belong in this group. While these guys give it their all to create some kick-ass carved pumpkins, in most cases these creators probably shouldn’t be trusted with a knife.

So to celebrate this Halloween’s pumpkin carving highs and lows, here are 30 of the best and worst pumpkin carving projects on the internet.

1. So that’s what happens when your face starts drooping because of old age.

Here’s How To Chill The F*** Out In Under 10 Minutes

Sometimes you just have to take a second for a little “me time.”

Thinkstock, Candace Lowry for BuzzFeed

Meditation can be a super quick and easy solution to ease anxiety and calm yourself in any situation.

ABC

I recently took an intensive six-week mediation course with psychic and energy healer Kris Cahill to learn how to soothe my anxiety issues.

Throughout her Meditation 1 class, students learn how to “become centered and focused, feel more relaxed while also feeling more energized, learn about being in present time.” Basically, she teaches you how to deal with anxiety and how to prevent bad thoughts from taking over your mind.

Here’s what I learned:

1. First, get into the calming state of mind by playing some relaxing music.

2. Be sure to sit on an upright chair and put your feet firmly on the floor.

Macey J Foronda for BuzzFeed

This way you’ll be able to take in ~new energy~ evenly.

3. Be sure to sit up straight rather than slumped over.

Macey J Foronda for BuzzFeed

4. Avoid crossing your arms and lay both of your palms face up on your legs. You’re now ready to get into your mediation.

Macey J Foronda for BuzzFeed

Now close your eyes, and you’re ready to get into your meditation.

5. Start by breathing slowly and deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. Then picture having a cord connected to your tailbone that goes all the way to the center of the Earth.

Macey J Foronda and Chris Ritter for BuzzFeed

This is called your “grounding cord,” and it’s what connects you to the Earth and new energy. Slowly picture it widening into your entire seat. Your grounding cord can look like anything, as long as it’s a color or pattern that comforts you or makes you feel serene. There’s no right or wrong way it should look.

The grounding cord is basically your highway for exchanging bad energy for good energy. Imagine it bringing you new energy from the Earth and simultaneously pushing out your old energy.

6. Now that you’re in your meditative state, picture anything that’s been stressing you out leaving your body with every exhale.

Macey J Foronda and Chris Ritter for BuzzFeed

By entering the “center of your head,” you should picture waving good-bye to all your “bad energy,” whether it be relationship problems, work, or financial issues.

7. Now picture your “aura,” or your personal space around you, and acknowledge what color you want it to be.

Macey J Foronda and Chris Ritter for BuzzFeed

Your aura is a field of energy around your entire body. Picture your aura as a protective bubble around you that starts 1 to 3 feet away from your body. You might naturally see a color take over your aura, and it can mean anything from security to self-love. There’s not really any bad color.

Your aura tends to take on energy from others, whether it be their worries or even happiness. By pushing out all your old energy, you’re cleansing and refreshing your own aura.

8. Finally, imagine a giant golden sun is above you, and it’s slowly filling your body with warm, happy energy, like water filling up a glass.

Macey J Foronda and Chris Ritter for BuzzFeed

This way, you’ll feel renewed with fresh energy, and hopefully all your anxiety and worry have been replaced with a serene feeling of relaxation.

9. Now, once you finally take a few final deep breaths, slowly open your eyes and your should feel as relaxed as this baby owl.

For more meditation and relaxation techniques, you can visit Kris’ website here, and if you need to relax on the go, here’s a soothing audio track with step-by-step instructions.

He Was Punished By His Owner In The Cruelest, Most Insane Way…Your Heart Will Break

It’s easy to get frustrated with our little animal friends, but even at their worst there’s absolutely no excuse for the amount of pain this poor pup was subjected to. At just six-weeks-old, like many young puppies, he chewed on something he shouldn’t have — his owner’s phone.

Instead of behaving like a rational human being, the cruel owner doused the tiny animal with boiling hot water and tossed him out of the fourth story balcony of his apartment in Chengdu, China. That could have easily been the tragic end of this sad story, but luckily someone came by to offer the kindness this sweet boy so desperately deserved.

Warning: the images of his wounds are extremely graphic.

Yan Yingying found the scalded pup lying on the street and immediately rushed him to a vet.

They did the best they could to stabilize the poor thing, now going by Tuffy, but he needed more help than the local clinic could provide.

So Yingying brought him to the skillful folks at Animals Asia about an hour’s drive outside of Chengdu.

Though the staff members had seen plenty of cases of abuse and trauma cross their path, they had never seen anything this barbaric and heartbreaking.

His body was covered in so many blisters that he couldn’t even close his eyes to sleep.

Slowly, thanks to an amazing team of doctors, Tuffy started to get better.

Injections and grafts from a small portion of skin by his scrotum that was untouched by the water gave the little guy a second chance.

Yingying would frequently visit Tuffy while he recovered, and once he was well enough, she brought him home to stay with her forever.

Large sections of his fur still haven’t grown back, but generous strangers have donated adorable new coats to keep him warm.

Despite all that he’s been through, Tuffy is finally the happy, playful pup he was born to be.

(via The Dodo)

It’s incredible that such a small dog could have so much strength and determination to get well. Thank goodness for the kind humans who outweighed the cruelty of another to give this cutie a second chance at finding trust, love, and happiness.

Visit Animals Asia’s website to make a donation and help them save more lives just like Tuffy.

This Cheap Kitchen Makeover Cost Only $100, But It Looks Amazing!

Having roommates can be one of the most frustrating living situations ever.

I moved in with a couple of friends when I was younger, but that only lasted for about two months. Not only did they go into my room without my permission, but they never cleaned up after themselves. I always wanted to make our house look organized and pretty, but that wasn’t really possible with slobs hanging around.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

Redditor NotElizaHenry knows my experience all too well. She even got rid of her messy roommate so that she could have the kitchen of her dreams! Two weekends and $100 later, she’d transformed her boring kitchen into a beautiful space.

She hated how the room looked while she was living with her messy roommate, so she first got right to work on scrubbing everything clean.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

Then she primed and painted the insides of her cabinet doors.

After sanding and priming everything else, she added two coats of paint to the cabinets and the walls. It was already looking much brighter!

Next, she bought inexpensive flooring and used a piece of plywood to help her cut the planks evenly.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

With all of the pieces cut to size, she began laying out the pattern.

When she pulled the vinyl baseboards off, she was greeted with this delightful sight.

But she pressed on and kept laying out the flooring, going over everything with her rolling pin.

The planks stuck easily thanks to the adhesive that was already attached to the bottom.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI2_BTF’); });

After she glued some new baseboards to the walls, the floor looked amazing.

There were a few gaps between planks, but she found a perfect solution.

She only needed to spend a few dollars on some brown caulk to fill the gaps easily.

Now she has a seriously beautiful kitchen.

Can you believe how amazing this turned out after only a couple of weekends of work?

Something tells me that NotElizaHenry is going to keep that kitchen looking gorgeous. If you love what she did with this space and want to replicate it yourself, you can find the full instructions here.

Game Commissioners Said They Couldn’t Help This Bear, So A Few Locals Saved The Day

In Perry Township, Pennsylvania, locals saw something that was equal parts saddening and strange. When they first noticed that a black bear was in their midst, their first instinct was to leave the area as quickly as possible.

But then they realized that something upsetting was going on — something so awful, it made them walk right up to the animal. Watch what happened when they approached it.

Here’s the worst part. Until these citizens stepped up, nothing was being done to help that poor bear. Game commissioners said that there was nothing they could do. Fortunately for the bear, these heroes were on its side.

This Dog Isn’t Convinced That It’s Safe To Come Inside

No one has ever claimed that dogs are the smartest creatures on the planet, but they sure are lovable!

After Sophie’s human took the screen off of their front door, she wasn’t quite sure if it was safe to come inside. Maybe she’s run into the screen too many times or has gotten scolded for scratching holes in it, but either way, she couldn’t wrap her head around the magical rectangle where a barrier used to be.

Watch as Sophie contemplates crossing the threshold. Even the promise of a treat isn’t enough to lure her inside.

This silly pooch was having a similar problem. Luckily, she has a very understanding daddy.

“Mother, you’re trapped! I will save you!”
