The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority appreciates your patience tonight on the Red Line, as delays are expected due to a woman giving birth on the train. The Metro did send out this advisory on Twitter:

Red Line: Expect residual delays in both directions due to an earlier medical emergency at Gallery Place.

Word quickly got out that the medical emergency was a baby being born.

“We apologize for any inconvenience” aka a woman is giving birth on the red line. Is this real life

— Katie V. (@andthisisKATIE) December 27, 2012

Only on Metro can there be both a birth and a hit deer during the same rush hour…

Yes, as I got off the metro, I’m pretty sure someone gave birth. Paramedics ran towards train behind mine. #LesMisPreGame

Most unfortunate that @kjindc7 isn’t on a Red Line train to live-tweet the birth that is apparently occurring.

— Anjan (@HeyAnjan) December 27, 2012

No, no one’s live-tweeting the delivery as far as we know, but a Washington Post reporter did let people know just what was going on.

#wmata – woman in labor on red line at gallery place. Expect delays, metro says.

#wmata – medical personnel are on scene at gallery place on red line where woman is in labor.

#wmata – woman’s water broke while on red line train bound for grovesnor. Normal service is back. She was taken to local hospital.

— Dana Hedgpeth (@postmetrogirl) December 27, 2012

We’re happy to know the baby is going to be born in the hospital and not on the D.C. Metro, as are these folks.

I’ve spent more time on @wmata in my life than I care to. I’d rather give birth over the flames of an erupting volcano than on a metro car.

Reportedly someone’s giving birth on the Red Line…there’s a life steeped in disappointment from the get-go. #wmata
