Oliver Willis: Not every debate has two ‘equally valid sides’

Oliver Willis and Media Matters had a problem with the credibility of a “gun researcher” quoted in a Washington Times story who said a report from the Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety was “riddled with errors”:

NRA-Friendly Washington Times Turns To Discredited Gun Researcher John Lott http://t.co/1W3kZJY496

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

Willis was asked what’s wrong with hearing from the other side of the issue:

@owillis Can't a debate have two sides? Why does the left always try to slander people when they don't agree? We need some more civility

— Kelly Riddell (@KellyRiddell) October 10, 2014

As it turns out, somebody’s got to be the one to decide which arguments are too silly to be debated, and which people are too “discredited” to debate them::

not every debate has two equally valid sides MT @KellyRiddell Can't a debate have two sides?

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

Uh-huh. And who gets to decide which argument is or isn’t “valid”?

This thinking is the road to fascism. https://t.co/w2TxJgXXHx

"the moon is a satellite" "no its made of green cheese" debate! RT @NolteNC This thinking is the road to fascism. https://t.co/BvwelfDMWc

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

An argument in opposition to gun-grabbing nanny-stater Michael Bloomberg is now on the level of saying the moon is made of green cheese?

@owillis yeah, cuz that's what you're talking about. Childish reply.

— John Nolte (@NolteNC) October 10, 2014

@NolteNC thats exactly what im talking about. you cant debate objective fact + reality, and if u do thats the real tyranny.

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

That from the person who argued that it wasn’t intellectually dishonest for Salon to insinuate that George Wallace was a “southern Republican”?

@owillis and who gets the power to decide that? Earth is flat. Planet is cooling. Blacks not fully human. All objective fact & reality once.

— John Nolte (@NolteNC) October 10, 2014

@NolteNC yes and when science disproved them, the vast majority of us moved on. although the right thinks jury's still out on some.

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

@owillis right just like the science was settled on AGW before the planet stopped warming for 18 years. Pure fascism.

— John Nolte (@NolteNC) October 10, 2014

@NolteNC except it hasnt stopped warming, but please proceed with your godwinning

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) October 10, 2014

@owillis but the sicence is settled, the planet has not warmed in 18 years. MY GOD WHY ARE WE DEBATING THIS.

— John Nolte (@NolteNC) October 10, 2014

@NolteNC youre the only one debating it.
